What type of scare devices can I buy for hiking in mountains that are home to bears?

Lucky asked:

Most likely I may encounter black bears. I DON’T want to buy a gun. But I am looking for some kind of device(s) to scare off bear in case I come upon one in the wild.

most sporting good stores sell bear bells which are supposed to help i know coghlans makes one thats easy to find. also carrying bear spray cant hurt for added protection. see links in sources. usually black bears leave ppl alone unless they feel like their in danger or their cubs are in danger. and remember dont piss off mommy bear.
