I’m looking for a home with a mountain view in Eastern Tennessee?
your ever-lovin’ ponyhead asked:
We’re finally retiring after 30 years of Naval service and Tennesse seems like a good place to settle, since it doesn’t have income tax or tax our military retirement. The cost of living is wonderful and it seems the natural disaster risk is very low (we were stationed in the bay area during the Loma Prieta/World Series earthquake and evacuated from Slidell, LA during hurricane Georges - luckily left two years before Katrina).

We drove through the Smokey Mountains when transferring once and I loved the brooks and waterfalls. I was stationed in Memphis and love the friendly folks in Tennessee.
I’m wondering if anyone knows of a town with decent schools that I can see mountains in the distance. Being in the central time zone would be a plus, and close to major highways so we could drive to our family that’s scattered all over.
It seems like a stretch, but cultural diversity, a low crime rate and a tolerant, free-thinking society would be nice, too.

don’t know if you really want to get back too far in the country or not but there is a lake there that is breathtaking it is watauga lake and it is surrounded by glorious mountains all around…you can see the reflection of the mountains in the water. its really laid back there and a short drive to johnson city, kingsport and bristol.
close to the state line and is not far from boone, banner elk, and all the ski resorts on the n.c. side. property there on the tn side is very affordable. i think the name of the county is carter co. there is everykind of mountainous recreation in the area you could ever dream of. it is Gods country and i love it. you are very lucky
Once you have narrowed down your town choices to a few, try this website:
They have houses in every town all over the country.
Dandridge (in Jefferson County) is a wonderful little town. It’s near Douglas Lake and has great mountain views. It’s also close to interstate 40 so getting to Knoxville or other cities is very easy.
Townsend is beautiful as well as pikeville tn and chattanooga
