How sneaky is a mountain lion?

robert f asked:

At 4:30am, a mountain lion quietly walked into a couple’s home and carried their labrador with its mouth out of the house and into the wilderness. At the time of the fatal attack, there were two dogs in the house. Why didn’t the dogs hear the mountain lion?

My dog hears everything and any noise will awaken my dog.

Even if you are walking in the woods trying to be quiet, chances are a puma will see you before you see him. I have come across them several times while hunting, for the most part just seeing a fleeting glimpse of their hindquarters just before they are gone for good. When they are prowling, they are even more stealthy. But we have seen them a lot closer to towns lately, even having a human death not long ago not far away.

I will get bashed by Golden Retreiver fans here, but those dogs they sell to people as pets have been kennel bred for dozens of generations to be sweet and dumb house dogs, not the outdoor hunting dogs that breed once was.

So I guess I’m saying is you have a combination of both factors. Quiet cat, sleepy overweight house dogs.
