Any tips or tricks on getting rid of snakes around your home?

I’m only asking because I walked into my kitchen earlier today and almost stepped on a big black snake. Scared the living H*E*C*K outta me!!!!!
I live in the country, mountains on all 4 sides, and I was wondering if there was anything I could spray, or plant or whatever around my home to keep them away from the house.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
